Hi Again all. Just wanted to let you know that life here is wonderful. My chickie - babe (Chandra Nadeau) and her son Davin moved here this past summer. Life has shown its true meaning every since. I never knew the full aspects that Life in Love was all about until now. Wow one very happy soldier here.

I miss the coast from time to time, especially in the winter during the carnivals. Sure don't miss fishing though. Well friends I wish you all the very best that life has to offer. Until next time. Bye from here.

I thought I'd drop you a note, as this web site seems to be a good way to reach people I haven't seen in while. Anyway, this is an e-mail I sent to a number of people on Sept 12. Its self explanatory. I have some pictures I took of the event which I'm waiting to get scanned. When I get them, I'll send them in.

"I wanted to let everybody out there know that I'm ok. Special thanks for the e-mails and phone calls. As most of you know, I live in Jersey City and commute daily into mid-town Manhattan for work. My apartment building is on the Hudson River waterfront within 2 or 3 miles of the World Trade Center (WTC). My daily routine takes me via subway through the WTC around 10:00 a.m. Yesterday around 8.50 a.m. I was in bed listening to the radio when they announced unconfirmed reports of an explosion at the WTC. I jumped out of bed and ran to my girlfriend Loretta's apartment on the 8th floor. Her apartment balcony has a clear, unobstructed view of the WTC. We both gazed in shock at the dark smoke billowing from the north tower of the WTC. At this point we had no clue what was going on. We turned on the TV and heard that perhaps a small plane had crashed into the tower. She went in to get some coffee. I continued to look in amazement when I heard the high pitched sound of jet engines to my left. In a brief moment that will be etched into my memory, I saw a large commercial plane coming in on a low turn from the south-west and directly impact the south tower of the WTC. The fiery explosions where like a Hollywood movie.

I was stunned. I called to Loretta and I began babbling like an idiot! I knew immediately that there was some kind of attack going on and that if there were 2 planes there might be more. I wanted to get as far away as I could from this place were the sky was literally falling. Loretta works at the New York Stock Exchange and is quite immune to stress. It actually took some coaxing from me and her sister (by phone) to get her to evacuate. I wanted to get away before the roads turned to gridlock. We grabbed a few things and were quickly on the New Jersey Turnpike on our way to the safety of sub-urban NJ where her sister lives. We spent most of the day glued to the TV coverage.

Today I'm back at work. I think I'm still in shock. I go through the WTC every day. I could have been there when it happened. My joy at having dodged the bullet is tempered by the sadness I feel for all those who didn't make it. I know people who work there and are missing. I would ask you all to have a good thought, or a prayer for all the victims. Make every day count."

Here are the pictures I took of the tragedy that occured : 9/11 WTC Pictures .

I am wondering if anyone knows whatever happened to Donald Gould. He did not attend our school but would be about 42 or 43 now? Also, does anyone have any leads on the Corbeil family? There was Michelle, Donny, Eugene, Mark, and Steve.

Also, Gary Jones and Mark Morris...if you have an idea where these people are or how to contact them..please email me with details.

Thank you,

A great place to 'slack your feet'

PAUL WATERS
The Gazette

As summer draws to a close, it gives me enormous pride to announce that one of my several home towns has won the Paul Waters Prize for Great Quebec Translations.

This year's award goes to the city where I (and Margot Kidder) went to high school - Sept-Iles on the North Shore of the Gulf of St. Lawrence. And before you charge me with bias or favouritism, let me assure you, I'm not trying to get even with anyone. The English in the city's tourist brochure stands on its own merits.

Just consider, if you will, the following three paragraphs, lifted intact from the opening pages:

Gastronomical Experiments

''Cordial greeting and unequalled hospitality are waiting for you in the network of lodging. The greedy ones will be delighted by the gastronomical experiments offered by the fresh products of the area.

''North of parallel 50th, an impressive destination for vacancy.

''So - welcome to our saline air scented oasis!''

There - isn't that great? Dave Barry couldn't have worded it better. The reference to ''the greedy ones'' was a particularly nice touch, I thought. Why, I ask, should I write anything at all when I can lift golden prose like this right out of a brochure?

To be fair here (and I do try to be fair), it's a great little brochure in many other ways, with nice pictures, lots of useful information and phone numbers and a fine little map of the area around the Baie des Sept Iles. But its most entertaining feature is its delightful English prose.

How about this wonderfully felicitous pair of sentences: ''The seven islands offer you an enchanted maritime picture. Haven of peace, this imposing archipelago invite you to live with the liking of the breaths of whales, the song of marine birds and superb sunset.''

Nature-lovers, it seems, will particularly like Grande-Basque island, ''where mysterious faults carry out to the viewpoints offering an azimuth panorama.'' The ''vegetable diversity'' of the Jardins de l'Anse is also said to be very impressive. And if you're overwhelmed by all these charms (and who wouldn't be?) you can simply heed the brochure's advice and ''take a sunbathe and slack your two feet in hot sand.''

Bachelor's Degree

The truly amusing thing about all this is that the guy in charge of the English translation and editing has proudly listed his name on the brochure's title page, but I'm a merciful soul (or at least, I try to be), so I won't tell you who he is. I will say, however, that he does claim to have a bachelor's degree in education.

Of course, exotic English is not the only reason to visit Sept-Iles. It's a great town with a magnificent bay, unbeatable shrimps and endless beaches where the sand does, in fact, sometimes get hot (for three days in August, I think). I, for one, have nothing but fond memories of the place.

Which reminds me: survivors of Sept-Iles' high schools are planning a reunion in Montreal in 2003. If you're interested, E-mail me or Susan Dykhuis at dykhuis_s@videotron.ca or Lurlene Dasilva at Imre_Nagy@deal-maker.

- Paul Waters is The Gazette's travel editor. His E-mail address is pwaters@thegazette.southam.ca.

He's always on the lookout for strange English in Quebec tourist brochures.

Virus Alert!!! If you receive an email from Lise Babin (QEHS), do not open the attachment file. The file contains a virus!
Steve Geronazzo (Webmaster)

Posted August 20th, 2001

I received an email with the SirCam virus from Michelle Talbot on Sunday morning (subject: Biblio-Théories congnitives-béhaivoirales 3GPS 129 2001) and Lise Babin just now (subject: GOVERNING BODY AGENDA). If you get strange email, DON'T TOUCH THE ATTACHED FILES!!!!

This virus sends itself, as an executable, to email recipients found in the Windows Address Book and addresses found in cached files. This executable is appended with a document, if one is found, in the MY DOCUMENTS folder. The mailing routine talks SMTP to a server and will use the server address found in infected executables. This address is presumably captured from the victim's machine which sent the virus to you. If that server is not in operation, or if relaying is not permitted, the virus attempts to use each of these three servers in succession, stopping when the first successful send occurs.

It may be received in an email message containing the following information:

Subject: [filename (random)]
Body: Hi! How are you?

I send you this file in order to have your advice
or I hope you can help me with this file that I send
or I hope you like the file that I sendo you
or This is the file with the information that you ask for
See you later. Thanks

- On Friday, July 6, 2001 Sue (Belanger) and her husband, Tom McEachern hosted a nice BBQ. Attendees included my brother Peter Dykhuis and his wife, Johanne Salesse; Lee Bromley and her Mother, Kay; Linda Belanger; Yolande Jordan; Lurline daSilva and her husband Imre Nagy, and me.

- After a lovely supper, good wine and the best of company, the women started to talk about all of our long-ago friends. Sue, Lurline, Lee and I are now planning a Reunion in Montreal in 2003 for all of the students who attended any Sept-Iles schools (French, English and students from Moisie Air Base) between 1955 and 1975. The 20-year span means we will have a chance to reconnect with our baby-boomer friends! We could use your help in getting the word out. Queries may directed to:
- Lee Bromley bromlee@sympatico.ca
- Lurline daSilva Imre_Nagy@deal-maker.com
- Sue McEachern suemceachern@videotron.ca
- Susan Dykhuis dykhuis_s@videotron.ca

- Possible dates for the reunion are: Labour Day week-end 2003 or Thanksgiving Day week-end 2003.

- By early 2003 we should have an idea of the number of attendees and at this time we would begin finalizing the plans -- getting an information kit out to attendees sometime in July 2003.

- This week-end was great. BBQ on Friday and on Sunday I saw Tom Blackburn and his son, Dan [drafted 10th overall by the NY Rangers at the June 23rd NHL Draft held in Florida] at Leslie (Blackburn) and Lily's home in Dorval.

- Hello to all,
- An alumni once suggested that we should create a chat room so that we could communicate in real time. I downloaded the latest ICQ program and it was able to find all the people who had ICQ #'s that were on my email contact list. That is why some of you received an email from me not too long ago.
- I would like to get some feedback on whether we should start some sort of chat room. I'll see if I could integrate a chat room directly on the QEHS Alumni website or perhaps just use a third party system like ICQ or Microsoft Messenger. Please contact me at : qehs@alumni.org or by ICQ at : 17320444

- Hi Grads from Sept-Iles schools :
- I am very interested in having a photo for my photo album of the Sept-Iles hockey arena which is named for my nephew, KARL DYKHUIS, who is an NHLer, # 28 Montreal Canadiens. Apparently the hockey arena was named for him. Too bad my late father did not live to see this!
- If one of you would be good enough to send me a .jpg photo of the arena clearly showing the name, I would be delighted.

Hello everyone,
- I would like to thank everyone who donated some money to help pay for the Internet Provider fees for our website. I have received enough money to pay for the 2000-2001 year as well as the next few years. For those of you who were thinking of sending money..... you won't have to...... not until another few years. :)

Hello everyone,
- I am asking for your support in order to help pay for the hosting of the QEHS Alumni Page. Last year, a gracious donor sent a cheque to pay for an entire year's worth of internet hosting with our provider Total.Net. This year, no money has come in and am asking for your help. I do not mind spending countless hours per week updating the site but cannot pay the Internet fees by myself forever.
- In general, one year's worth of webhosting is 190$/year, and this year I spent an extra 175$ to register our site with Register.com (to get a .org address). I will post the names of the donors on the website and I promise that any extra money collected will be used for upcoming years.
- For further information, please email me at qehs-alumni@total.net. If enough people respond, 5$ / person would be enough.

Thanks for your help,

It seems that people who have older computers had problems loading the website so after doing more tests, I decided to remove the music, Nedstat, and Javascript from this website in order to have a faster loading website. I will try to add these features a little later on only if they don't affect the download speed.
