Welcome to Baie d'Urfé!

I've had the great fortune to live in Baie d'Urfé for all of my life. The part that I know best is a quiet little residential town, but north of the highway there's an industrial park (mostly filled with trees until recently) which I don't visit very often.

Some would say that Baie d'Urfé is too quiet. A little on the boring side. That's true, but I like it that way. People will look you in the eye when they pass you on the street, say "hello" and maybe stop for a chat. My own personality doesn't really enjoy that ( ;-) ), but I appreciate living in a friendly place. More importantly for me, I can go for a walk alone at night and listen to the crickets and other insects sing without being distracted by the noise of automobiles. And I can pass slowly through empty lots (which are quickly becoming scarce) and observe nature.

Anyway, here are some pictures taken in and around my town:

This is the Baie d'Urfé Town Hall at night. It is no longer used as the Town Hall since the forced merger took effect at the beginning of 2002, but the building is still used as a local municipal service centre. Someone was working late on the night I took this photo.

This building was given to the town by James Morgan, president of Henry Morgan & Co. Ltd., in 1912. I don't know when it was first built.

Here we are looking east toward the Town Hall in the late afternoon. We are looking over the Town's new "Millenium Pond", built to commemorate the start of the new millenium. Unfortunately the Town only survived a single year of the third millenium as a legal entity.

Here we are sitting on a park bench, to the west of the Town Hall, looking toward the wharf of the Baie d'Urfé Boating Club. This was a long (16 seconds) exposure - it doesn't really look that bright there at night.

Here we can see the Boating Club's wharf again, but from the other side. Most of the bay is surrounded by public park land with benches where one can sit and look out over the water. It is especially nice to sit here on a nice summer night and look out toward the lights of the South Shore and Montreal way in the distance.

This is the Red Barn and the Coop. When I was a kid the two buildings were separate. They were joined together in the early 1990s. The large barn was the home of the Baie d'Urfé Volunteer Fire Department. The smaller portion to the right was the "Coop", where I attended Cub meetings. It was called The Coop because it used to be a chicken coop.

That rectangular stone construction visible in the far right of the photograph is the d'Urfé Memorial Cairn. It commemorates the founding of the church on Caron Point by the Abbé d'Urfé in 1686.

Here we are standing in Berthold Park, looking toward the Baie d'Urfé Yacht Club. This is one of my favourite parks. The huge Canadian flag that we see is flying from the Centennial flagpole, which was given to Baie d'Urfé in Canada's Centennial year of 1967. The flagpole had been a fir tree living in British Columbia.

Oxford Park. This is another favourite, but only for walking through. The swings that were here when I was a kid have long since been removed, and even the bench where I sometimes would sit and talk with friends has been removed. I seem to usually pass through here at night these days, so it's nice that lights were installed along the path a couple of years ago.
